Default Lightning Strike vs Lightning Orb

One requires much less energy and has half the casting time than the other. One requires a few seconds for full damage, but can end early on certain foes. The other is a projectile that can miss. Ebon Battle Standard of Honor and Intensity both seem to go better with one of the two.

Like you already concluded, they both have their uses. Maybe even on same bar. Abuse blocked line of sight with Lightning Strike, and when you want to lure foes into burning off the hex removal skills before hitting them with something bigger.

What's best for Intensity is entirely up to what foes you hit. High armor targets, a high damage air magic spell or in some cases armor ignoring damage. If Cracked Armor then even better AE. Considering the AE is armor ignoring, it's quite fun to hit a pet or minion with it. Played around with Malign Intervention just for the fun of it, and while you can AE foes for 200-300 armor ignoring, it's of course a bit more cumbersome.

There can be only one!

And I don't know what you mean by AE or what Malign Intervention has to do with this.

AE, Area of Effect. Or do you rather prefer the term AoE?
The damage dealt by Intensity is armor ignoring, however it's based on actual spell damage. If you hit a low level target (for example hitting a lvl 0-1 minion created by Malign Intervention) you will maximize the AoE damage dealt to other foes. In any case it's best to hit a squishy target like a caster, pet, minion, rather than high armor target.

But fine, you mentioned Intensity in your original post and a strayed commenting on that.
Lightning Orb is the only choice among the two if you're using it with Intensity. There.
